25 de Abril Bridge connects the capital of Portugal, Lisbon to the municipality of Almada. It is an imposing suspension bridge; build in 1966 by the same American company that built the Golden Gate Bridge, in San Francisco, USA. The bridge crosses the Tejo River at its narrowest point and it has become one of Lisbon’s most impressive landmarks.
About 25 de Abril Bridge
The bridge built in 1966 cost Portugal $32 million dollars but due to the tolls and taxes, in the course of 25 years the costs have been covered. Initially, it was proposed that after the costs are covered, the bridge will be toll free, but with the addition of a train line below the road level in 1999, that could not happen. Fear not, the toll is only when you’re traveling northbound into Lisbon and it is only € 1.45 for cars (there is no toll when travelling southbound). More good news: no toll for the month of August!
The impressive bridge was first called the Salazar Bridge but after the revolution of 1974 its name was changed to 25 de Abril Bridge. The bridge’s length is 2.3 km and it is suspended 70 m above the Tejo River. It’s good to know that it is the second tallest structure in Portugal; the main towers are 190 m!
