About the Öresund Bridge
Interesting to know:
The plans for the construction of the Öresund Bridge were made starting with 1991, when the parliaments of the two countries signed an agreement in this matter.
The Öresund Bridge was completed in 2000, thus becoming the longest road and railway bridge in Europe. Three years later, the bridge won the “Outstanding Structure” award, and what a well deserved prize this is!
This is not a usual bridge: apart from the traditional bridge structure, it is composed of a tunnel and of an artificial island (named Pepparholmen) which was projected to ease the transition from tunnel to bridge.
It was intended to cross the Øresund Strait, thus representing a 16 km long structure (of which, the bridge has 4 km in length, the artificial island, another 4 km, while the tunnel extends 8 km more) connecting not only the cities, but also two important road networks: the Scandinavian one and the Central and Western European one.
Useful to know:
Even though the bridge crosses the border between to countries, your passport will not be checked, and this owed to the European Union and Shengen reglementations.
One may cross the Öresund Bridge by bus, by car and by train-as the structure features a two-track railway- thus covering the distance between Copenhagen and Malmo, Sweeden,in 20 minutes.
There is a fee for crossing the entire lenght of the bridge (tunel included) for each type of transportation. If you go by car, you will be charged €40, while the train ticket will cost you €9 ( prices in summer 2011). You may pay the fee by credit card as well as cash.
